How Interventions Work

Assisting actively using alcoholics and drug addicts sometimes requires efforts by family and friends to motivate their loved ones to help. Years ago we felt that an addict had to "hit bottom" before helping them was possible. Hitting bottom was defined as losing your jog and family, being sentenced to jail or prison, or experiencing serious health problems.
Eventually, substance abuse counselors began experimenting with proactive counseling that resulted in a new perspective. Dr. Vernon Johnson developed this new perspective and eventually published a landmark book, I'll Quit Tomorrow that outlined this revolutionary approach. Since then many substance abuse therapists have employed this concept and today thousands of alcoholics and drug addicts are clean and sober as the result. The most recent book outlining the process of interventions was published by Jeff and Debra Jay and has done an excellent job of updating Dr. Johnson's original work. Love First walks the reader through the process of interventions, defines when a professional interventionist should be employed and details the power and importance of love and caring as an essential component of a successful intervention.
Ron Harrison has been conducting interventions since the eary 1980's.
